Digital vignettes for the Czech Republic

In January 2021, the Czech Republic removed vignettes in sticker form, replacing them with digital vignettes. You no longer need to buy a sticker and glue it to your vehicle’s windscreen. Digital vignettes are issued based on the driver’s license plate and indicated date of entering the Czech Republic roads.

Digital vignettes for the Czech Republic are available all year round. Choose one type of e-vignette, cover the fee and receive the approved digital toll sticker via email within minutes.

Who needs to buy a vignette for the Czech Republic?

A vignette for the Czech Republic must be purchased by all the drivers of at least four-wheel vehicles not exceeding 3.5 tonnes. No additional vignette is required for motorbikes, trailers, and caravans.

For vehicles that exceed 3.5 t, including company vans and camper vans, the road toll (toll) is collected via an electronic system. The toll to be paid is automatically calculated using a special electronic device (OBU), which can be bought at certain selling points.  The amount of the toll depends on the vehicle category and the mileage.

Important: You do not have to pay for a vignette if you are driving an electric, hydrogen, or hybrid car (CO2 emissions up to 50 g/km). However, it is necessary to declare the number license plate of the vehicle in advance so that the system does not impose a fine.

Types of vignettes in the Czech Republic

The e-vignette toll is mandatory for vehicles up to 3.5 t, while vehicles exceeding 3.5t tonnes must use the toll system MYTO CZ.

Unlike in Austria, for example, there are no roads in the Czech Republic that require paying additional tolls.

Vehicles up to 3.5t

Drivers of vehicles with at least four wheels up to 3.5 t may purchase an e-vignette which comes in three types:

  • a 10-day vignette
  • a 30-day vignette
  • a 1-year vignette

Vehicles over 3.5t

Drivers of vehicles exceeding 3.5 t are required to register in the MYTO CZ online toll system and have a GPS locator installed in their vehicles. The device determines the location of the vehicle and counts the kilometers traveled on Czech roads for the purpose of toll payment using a GPS system. At the same time, it communicates with the operator’s headquarters using GSM communication..

Toll roads can be easily identified by the white and green road signs located along the road. There are also a few roads surrounding large cities, such as Prague and Brno, which are exempt from the vignette requirement.

Vignette control

Based on the vehicle license plate, the control authorities – the Police of the Czech Republic and the Customs Administration of the Czech Republic – determine whether you have a valid electronic vignette or whether your vehicle is exempt from the toll requirement.

Vignette checks are carried out on toll sections of motorways using patrol vehicles with camera systems recognizing vehicles’ number plates, via a remote connection with control gates or in the form of checks at MOPs and car parks.

Penalties

Vignette checks are carried out regularly, and not having a valid one can result in financial penalties. You can receive a fine of up to CZK 20,000.

Moreover, the check also traces the potential unlawful use of toll exemptions. Vignette system violation, for example, using toll exemption when not being entitled to do so, may cost a driver up to CZK 100,000 fine.

A fine of up to CZK 5,000 applies when a driver entitled to a toll exemption uses a tolled motorway section but did not submit an exemption notice.

The same amount of fine may be imposed on individuals failing to notify the State of Transport Infrastructure Fund within 10 business days that the reason required for exemption of the vehicle has ceased to exist.

Benefits

Forget about glueing or scratching adhesive stickers

An e-vignette is a 100% online solution that allows a driver to forget about glueing an adhesive sticker onto the vehicle windscreen or scratching it off once it expires.

e-Vignette is obtainable entirely online

Digital vignettes can be obtained at online stores from whatever place with an Internet connection. A driver can purchase an e-vignette with a few simple clicks and get the vignette delivered straight directly to their email address.

No need to obtain replacement toll stickers

Since a digital vignette is not placed on the windscreen, a driver no longer needs to worry to obtain a replacement toll sticker in case of a windscreen breakage.

Free choice of a vignette’s validity start date

Not only can a driver choose between 10-day, 30-day, or 1-year digital vignettes, but also they can indicate the validity start date of their e-vignette on their own.

FAQ

Do I need to buy a digital vignette to drive through the Czech Republic?

In January 2021, the Czech Republic removed adhesive vignettes, replacing them with a digital system. In order to use most expressways and highways in the country, a driver must purchase a digital vignette. It applies to drivers of four-wheel motor vehicles up to 3.5 t (excluding hybrid, hydrogen, electric cars, etc.). Motor vehicles exceeding 3.5 t are subject to tolls, which depend on the route.

Where can I buy a vignette for the Czech Republic?

There are three ways to buy a digital vignette for the Czech Republic, i.e., at the online store, at certain sales points, or at the self-service kiosk. Save your time and obtain your vignette entirely online before going to the Czech Republic.

Is a sticker vignette still required in the Czech Republic?

No. Sticker vignettes were removed, and a driver no longer need to put an adhesive vignette on the vehicle’s windshield. The purchased digital vignette is automatically linked to the license plate number, so the vignette system is able to recognize and verify the validity of your vignette.

How long do I need to wait after purchasing my digital vignette before it becomes valid?

After your payment is successfully registered, we will start registering your license plates. It should take a couple of minutes. Once your plates are registered with the Czech Republic’s official toll provider, we will send you a confirmation message containing a QR code via email. Your vignette is now valid, and you can start your trip to the Czech Republic!

Do I need to carry my vignette confirmation to use the Czech expressways and motorways?

No, it is not mandatory to carry the vignette confirmation with you. Nevertheless, having the order confirmation may be useful in case of some problems on the road.

When should I buy a digital vignette for the Czech Republic?

The e-vignette must be obtained before driving on the Czech roads and motorways where the toll applies. Do remember that it is not possible to obtain a digital vignette at a border crossing or road junction. Therefore, you should best obtain a vignette online before you set off for the Czech Republic.

Do I need a vignette for my trailer?

You have three options for a digital vignette to choose from. The Czech Republic vignette can be issued for 10 days, 30 days, or 1 year. Moreover, you can also select the validity start date of your electronic vignette.

Is the Czech Republic vignette transferable to another vehicle?

If the start date of your vignette has not yet occurred, you can edit your order and transfer it to another vehicle. If the vignette is already active, it is not possible to make any changes.
